About this software

The riskPointer software is used to calculate the area of the LAA (Low Attenuation Area) and %LAA (the ratio of LAA to the lung field region) from CT images of the lung field.

COPD(Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and CT examination

APP Scenaria 7Pulmonary emphysema,one type of COPD, caused primarily by smoking,is an illness that involves damage to the alveoli walls. By setting the appropriate threshold value,pulmonary emphysema can be visualized as LAA on CT images.

APP Scenaria 8The riskPointer uses colors to display the low attenuation area corresponding to the destruction of the alveoli walls in the lung field. When explaining examination results to the patients for “informed consent”,details can be shown visually for easy understanding compared with conventional explanations with values.

 Easy color display only by selecting images

APP Scenaria 9With conventional software, troublesome processes are required such as a manual ROI setting around the lung field and so on. With the riskPointer, the low attenuation area (LAA) is processed with a color based on the threshold value which is set by the user and the calculated results of %LAA are displayed in a short period of time.

Two different analysis modes are selectable.

APP Scenaria 10There are two types of analysis modes. With Upper/Middle/Lower Lung Field mode, the selected three cross sections can be analyzed as in the general CT examination of pulmonary emphysema. The Entire Lung Field mode allows the analysis of whole lung images obtained during chest CT checkups.

Easy comparison report with previous results, easy image saving

APP Scenaria 11Reporting function of the riskPointer is capable of not only making the report of the current examination results, but also adding previous examination results, enabling the user to see the change of %LAA at a glance. It is also possible to output the analysis images in the color DICOM format or BMP format, and the analysis value in the text format (CSV).

The following values are calculated from CT images of the lung field.

[Upper/ Middle/Lower Lung Field mode]

  • Mode to process three sections near the upper end of the aortic arch, near the bifurcation of the trachea and about 1~3cm above the right diaphragm.
  • Area of the LAA [cm²], Area of the lung field [cm²], %LAA

[Entire Lung Field mode]

  • Mode to process all CT images made by scanning the whole lung field.
  • Volume of LAA [cm³], Volume of the lung field [cm³], %LAA
  • Area of the LAA [cm²], Area of the lung field [cm²]
